Terms And Conditions


1. The Gallery space


DakshinaChitra invites proposals for exhibitions for its gallery. which will be presented to its exhibition committee for approval. The Centre does not charge a fee for the use of its gallery space. The exhibition floor space is approximately 1500 sq.ft. The booking of gallery space at DakshinaChitra will include the duration required for mounting the exhibition as well as dismantling it. An exhibition can be kept at DakshinaChitra for 2 weeks or as specified.

The gallery space consists of 3 rooms of size a) 12’-11”x26’-5” b) 16’-1”x17’-10” c) 14’-11”x11’-10”. Enclosed is a plan of the gallery. The flooring is terracotta tiles and the walls are exposed brickwork painted white.

2. Timings of Art Gallery


The gallery at DakshinaChitra will be open all days of the week (except Tuesdays) from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm. These are the same timings as the entire Heritage Centre.

3. Entrance ticket to DakshinaChitra


Entrance to the art gallery is available to all visitors as part of the regular entrance tariff. This ticket allows visitors to see and experience the entire 10 acre campus of the Centre with its 18 vernacular houses from the four States of South India and the permanent exhibitions of artefacts and textiles housed within the traditional houses. However, visitors who come for the inauguration of the art exhibition will not be charged any entrance fee.

4. Facilities at DakshinaChitra


The Center has a vegetarian restaurant – Kanali that serves Tea, Coffee, Cold drinks, Snacks and a south Indian lunch. There are toilets at various locations including a public toilet area in the vicinity of the Art gallery and restaurant. The center also has a guest house. DakshinaChitra will provide the artist with accommodation at a concessional rate of Rs. 100 per day for 1 or 2 days depending on the requirements for setting up and dismantling and packing the exhibition. This is subject to room availability at the time. A bus to and from the center also available from the MCF office. Departure at 9.30 am return at 6.15 pm.


5. Expenses


Expenses related to the exhibition will be borne by the exhibitor, unless otherwise specified in writing by the DakshinaChitra Exhibition committee.

a) Transportation of art, including insurance & packing and unpacking

The Exhibitor is expected to provide 300-500 invitation cards, covers and postage costs for distribution by DAG, if he desires invitations to be sent.

6. Insurance


The Exhibitor will be responsible for the insurance of the art objects or materials exhibited at DAG. The Exhibitor will provide a copy of the insurance policy or a separate letter indicating that the exhibitor assumes all responsibility for the objects that are being exhibited.

7. Unpacking & Packing for shipment


Unpacking and packing will be arranged DakshinaChitra. The Exhibitor will bear the expenses.

8. Evaluation of condition of art works


One member from the Exhibitor and a member from DakshinaChitra will jointly evaluate the condition of the art works on arrival and on the closure of the exhibition. The same will be documented and signed off by both representatives at start and closure of the exhibition to avoid damage.

9. Publicity


DakshinaChitra will provide publicity for the exhibition through press releases, through its newsletter and through its website. If the exhibitor requests it, DakshinaChitra will send out invitations to its patrons and friends on receipt of invitation cards, covers and postage costs.

10. Mounting and dismantling


The mounting of the exhibition and its subsequent dismantling will be carried out by the Exhibitor, alongwith DakshinaChitra staff. All art objects are to be removed from the gallery premises within 2 days of the closure of the exhibition.

11. Curatorial approval


DAG reserves the right to exercise its curatorial discretion with respect to the nature and quality of the exhibits on display.

12. Sales

Sales of Exhibition catalogues and brochures will be permitted at the venue and no commission will be charged by DAG for the same.


13. Security


The Center does not have automated security devices, although it will post extra security personnel for exhibitions, if required.

14. Air Conditioning


The gallery is not yet air conditioned.

15. Refundable Deposit


A refundable, non-interest bearing deposit amount of Rs.1, 000 (Rupees one thousand only) will need to be given at the time of booking the exhibition to cover the costs of:
a. Any damage to the floors, walls and other fixtures of the gallery
b. Cancellation of booking
c. Breach of agreement (Non-observance of any of the terms & conditions)
All cheques/drafts should be made in favour of “Madras Craft Foundation”

16. Copyright of artist’s work


Copyrights for reproduction of artist’s work to be sought for archival/academic and research purposes.

17. Centre’s premises


No littering of the premises will be allowed. Except during the inauguration food or drinks will be permitted within the exhibition space. Serving of alcoholic beverages will be avoided in the Centre’s premises. The Exhibitor is responsible for taking special care while unpacking, mounting, dismantling and repacking of the art works to avoid any damage to the gallery property (floors, walls, etc.)
