A Note on DakshinaChitra

Madras Craft Foundation is a non profit, non governmental organisation working towards the promotion and preservation of South Indian Culture. It was started in 1984 by Dr. Deborah Thiagarajan, an American lady who was inspired by the generosity and rich culture she found prevalent in the villages of South India.

The Madras Craft Foundation hopes to achieve its objectives through its main project – DakshinaChitra – which opened to the public in 1996. At DakshinaChitra the traditional domestic architecture of South India namely Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka are represented. Through the many events and activities organised at DakshinaChitra the cultural aspects such as folk art, craft, contemporary art of the four states are highlighted.

DakshinaChitra is an effort to keep our rich traditions alive and meaningful to contemporary society.
