In March 2004 DakshinaChitra
instituted the DakshinaChitra
Virudhu Award for the folk performing arts. This award is
given annually to an individual for his/her sustained achievement
and promotion of the folk performing arts. The award carries
a purse of Rs 20,000, supported by the Friends of DakshinaChitra
and a citation is presented, along with a performance, at
a special function.
Through this award we hope to encourage the
folk performing artists of South India in taking their art
to the future generations.
The 2004 recipient was Sambandam of the Purusai
Therukoothu Troupe of Tamil Nadu.
2005 - Recipient Shri. Madhava Chakyar and Shri. G.Venu of Natana Kairali,Kerala.
2006 - Recipient Shri. Bhaskar Kogga Kamat of Yakshagana Gombeyata Mandali Puppet troupe, Karnataka
2007 - Recipient Shri Urumu Naganna for Urumu dance, Andhra Pradesh.
2008 - Recipient Shri.K.K. Ramachandra Pulavar for Tolpava Koothu (shadow puppetry), Kerala
2009 - Recipient Shri. Subbu Arumugam for Villupattu, Tamil Nadu.
2010 - Recipient Shri.P.Rajagopal of Kuttu Kalai Kudam,TamilNadu.
