How did it all begin? Governance

What we do

We preserve, promote and communicate the rich cultural heritage of South India

Through the heritage houses purchased, dismantled and relocated at DakshinaChitra and the craft exhibited contextually in each house.
Heritage Houses
Hands-on Craft and Performance Activities
Through the simple hands-on craft and performance activities visitors can try at the center. We promote crafts and performances through hands on activities and workshops.
Through our education based special activities for students and children ( both rural and urban ) organized regularly. We hope to increase their awareness and appreciation of the cultural heritage of South India.

Craft Shop
Through our craft shop and craft bazaar we network with a wide number of craftsmen, artisans, artists, Self Help Groups, NGOs and give their products a wider platform. We also offer design advice and marketing advice to interested groups to make their products competitive.
Through the workshops we organize on craft, art, folk art, folk performance, textiles, traditional practices for students, children, adults and educators we hope to encourage the use of traditional skills to meet contemporary needs.
Workshop

Through hosting regular folk performances at DakshinaChitra and by involving the performers in interactive programs and workshops to improve the quality of the performances. By this, they might be able to continue with their art, come in contact with a larger market and gain dignity and more income.

Library Activities

Through our library and archives and their activities we encourage research by students, our staff and the public.

Through our international seminars held appropriately once in two years we strive to raise the consciousness of the cultures of India.

Social EventsThrough our center as a venue for corporate & social events we hope to encourage revenue generating activities that will ensure the future of DakshinaChitra.
