ECHOES OF THE COROMANDEL

Echoes of the Coromandel: A Reclamation of a Forgotten Shoreline "Echoes of the Coromandel" is a curatorial project that revisits India's maritime history through the Coromandel Coast, an often-overlooked region in South India. While historically vibrant and interconnected, the narrative has been overshadowed by focus on the western coast influenced by colonial narratives. This exhibition highlights the significance of maritime routes from the Coromandel that facilitated trade and cultural exchange with regions such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. Curated by interns of DakshinaChitra’s museum studies program, the project draws on extensive archival research, field visits, and engagement with artifacts to illuminate the unique stories of the eastern coast. Exhibition Highlights: Historical Narratives: Exploration of maritime links from the Sangam Age to the Medieval Period through literature and material culture. Replicas and Reconstructions: Intern-developed models of maritime tools and vessels based on thorough research. Textile Traditions and Trade: The Coromandel's role in the global textile trade and its connections to Southeast Asian fashion. Faiths in Flux: Mapping the spread of Buddhism, Saivism, and Vaishnavism across the Indian Ocean. Living Legacies: Oral histories and practices that showcase the enduring impact of maritime connections on South Indian communities. This exhibition represents months of immersive learning from DakshinaChitra interns, who explored historical records and visited key ports along the Coast. Their curatorial journey has reshaped their understanding of history, identity, and cultural continuity.
